The Reasons Why We learn English as Our Subject
In Indonesia, English becomes foreign language for society because Indonesia is not formerly colonies or protectorates of Britain. Indonesian people also just use English in some situations like in the school, in the airport, in the office etc. But other countries in Southeast Asia like Malaysia, Singapore use English as their second language because they use it in their daily life.
Based on Kahru's circle (1985), Indonesia is in expanding circle. There are three circles in Kahru's circle, Inner circle, Outter circle and expanding circle. Countries that are in the Inner circle are United Kingdom, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand. Those countries are whose society become native speaker of English.
And countries that are in the outter circle are Singapore, Hongkong, India, Malaysia and Philipine. Those countries are the colonies or protectorates of England.
And countries that are in the Expanding circle are European, Korea, Vietnam, Russian, Indonesia, Africa, Myanmar etc except countries in Inner and Outter circle.

There are five reasons why people learn English.
1. Because English is on the curriculum. English is on the curriculum at primary or secondary level, but for others, studying the language reflects some kind of a choice.
2. Many people learn English because they have moved into a target-language community and they need to be able to operate succesfully within that community. A target language community is a place where English is the national language in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, etc or where it is one of the main languages of culture and commerce in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, etc.
3. Some students need English for a Specific Purpose (ESP). Such students of ESP may need to learn legal language or the language of Tourism, Banking or Nursing. An extremely popular strand of ESP is the teaching of Business English, where students learn about how to operate in English in the business world. Many students need English for Specific Purpose in order to study at an English-speaking university or college, or because they need to access English-language academic texts.
4. Many people learn English because they think it will be useful in some way for international communication and travel. Such students of general english often do not have a particular reason for going to English classes, but simply wish to learn to speak, (read and write) the language effectively for wherever and whenever this might be useful for them.
The purposes students have for learning will have an effect on what it is they want and need to learn and as a result will influence what they are taught.
